IELTS has confirmed that paper-based testing in India will be phased out, with computer-delivered IELTS (CD-IELTS) becoming the only available format from September 2026. Students can still sit paper-based sessions until the end of August 2026.
This decision reflects the growing global preference for digital testing and aims to provide students with a faster, more flexible, and modern experience. Over recent years, the majority of candidates in India have already chosen the computer-delivered format due to its convenience, quicker results, and greater availability of test slots.
Key fact: This is an operational change — not an academic one. The IELTS exam structure, scoring system, band descriptors, and global university recognition all remain completely unchanged.
What Changes from September 2026
From September 2026, the following changes apply to IELTS test-takers in India:
Paper-based IELTS (fully handwritten, all sections on paper) will no longer be available at any test centre in India
Listening, Reading, and Writing sections will typically be completed on a computer at a test centre
New option — IELTS on Computer (Writing on Paper): IDP will also offer this format for candidates who prefer to handwrite the Writing section. Listening and Reading are still taken on a computer, but Writing remains paper-based
Speaking will continue to be conducted in person with an examiner — in every format
Students will type their Writing answers using a keyboard, unless they choose the Writing-on-Paper option
On-screen tools will be available — including a timer, question navigator, and text highlight function
All new test bookings from September 2026 will automatically be for computer-delivered sessions, with the Writing-on-Paper variant available on request
Action required: If you have been preparing exclusively with pen and paper, you must switch to keyboard-based writing practice immediately. The typing speed and interface familiarity can affect your Writing section performance.
What Stays Exactly the Same
Despite the delivery change, everything that matters about IELTS remains identical:
4-section format: Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking — all retained
Band scoring: 0–9 scale, same descriptors, same assessment criteria
Speaking test: Still face-to-face with a certified IELTS examiner — no change
Test duration: Same total time allocation for each section
Question types: All formats (multiple choice, gap fill, matching, essay) remain identical
University recognition: Accepted by the same 11,500+ universities and organisations worldwide
Visa acceptance: UK Home Office, Australian DHA, IRCC Canada — all continue to accept IELTS scores from computer-delivered tests
Band requirements: University and visa minimums remain the same (e.g. IELTS 6.5 for most UK universities)
Important: A score from a computer-delivered IELTS test is identical in value and recognition to a score from a paper-based test. No university or visa authority treats them differently.

Why Is IELTS Moving to Computer-Based Testing?
The shift to fully digital testing is driven by four core advantages that benefit students:
More Test Dates Available
Computer-based testing makes it easier to run frequent exam sessions throughout the year. Students can expect more slots across cities, reducing waiting times and allowing better alignment with university application deadlines.
Faster Results
Computer-delivered IELTS results are available in 3–5 days, compared to approximately 13 days for paper-based tests. For students managing tight application windows or multiple university deadlines, this is a meaningful advantage.
Better Test Experience
Modern test centres provide a quieter, more organised digital environment. On-screen tools like question navigation, answer review, and text highlighting give students better control over their time and strategy during the exam.
Aligns with Student Preferences
The majority of IELTS candidates in India already choose the computer-delivered format when given the option. The transition to a fully digital format reflects this established preference and the broader shift toward digital learning and assessment.
Transition Timeline — Key Dates
1
Now – August 2026 · Last chance for paper-based IELTS
Eligible candidates can still book and sit paper-based IELTS sessions. If you strongly prefer handwritten exams, book your slot immediately — availability will reduce as the deadline approaches and demand for remaining paper slots increases.
2
July – August 2026 · Switch your preparation
Even if you're not sitting your exam until later, now is the time to transition your preparation to computer format. Practise typing essays, use the British Council or IDP online practice platforms, and book a computer-delivered mock test at Search Education.
3
September 2026 · Computer-based IELTS becomes the standard option
From September 2026, all IELTS registrations in India will be for computer-delivered sessions. Most candidates will complete Listening, Reading, and Writing on a computer. Candidates who prefer to handwrite the Writing section can request IDP's "IELTS on Computer (Writing on Paper)" format — Listening and Reading stay on computer, Writing stays on paper, and Speaking remains face-to-face either way.
4
Ongoing · Same recognition, faster results
All IELTS scores — paper or computer — remain equally recognised. From September 2026, all Indian students will benefit from the 3–5 day result turnaround, making it easier to meet application and visa deadlines.
Impact on Students Planning to Study Abroad
For Indian students with study abroad plans, this transition has three practical implications:
1. Preparation Strategy Must Evolve
If you've been practising IELTS writing by hand, you must now switch to keyboard practice. Typing speed, comma placement, and editing on screen feel different from handwriting — especially under timed exam conditions. Students who adapt their practice to a computer interface early will have a significant advantage.
2. Faster Results Affect Your Application Timeline
Computer-delivered IELTS results arrive in 3–5 days. If you previously planned your application timeline around 13-day paper-based results, you can now compress your timeline slightly — or use the extra buffer to apply to more universities before a deadline.
3. More Flexible Test Scheduling
Greater availability of computer-based test dates means you no longer have to plan months ahead to secure your preferred test slot. This is particularly useful for students with changing university deadlines or those who need to resit to improve their score.

The good news: if you know IELTS content well, adapting to the computer format is straightforward. Here are the six most important preparation steps:
Start Typing Practice Now (or Confirm Your Format)
If you're comfortable typing, switch to keyboard practice immediately — use Google Docs or Word to replicate Writing section conditions. If you prefer to handwrite, ask about IDP's "IELTS on Computer (Writing on Paper)" option, which lets you keep handwriting for Writing while Listening and Reading move to computer.
Take a Computer Mock Test
Book a computer-delivered IELTS mock test at Search Education. The interface, on-screen timer, and keyboard navigation will feel familiar on the actual test day.
Book Before August 2026
If you genuinely prefer paper-based testing, secure your slot before August 2026. After September, only computer-based sessions will be available.
Align With Your Intake
Plan your IELTS date to arrive 4–6 weeks before your university application deadline. Results come faster with CD-IELTS — as quickly as 3–5 days.
Leverage Faster Results
Computer-based IELTS results are delivered in 3–5 days versus 13 days for paper. Use this to your advantage during tight application windows.
Choose Coaching That Knows CD
Ensure your IELTS coaching covers the computer interface, on-screen highlighting, and keyboard shortcuts — not just content. Ask Search Education about our CD-IELTS mock tests.
Key difference in the Writing section: You can edit, delete, and rewrite your essays on screen before time is up — something you cannot easily do on paper. This is actually an advantage for most students once they are comfortable with typing.
